Using FTP, I get timeout issues either connecting or getting directory listing.
This is an issue with passive vs active FTP and ports on your PC and network. The 'quick fix' for getting around this issue, is to use secure FTP.
In the "hostname" area of your FTP program where you put either the hostname or the IP address, prefix it with: sftp://
Examples:
sftp://www.mydomain.com
sftp://204.57.72.8
